Ah the Kindle. It's been around for quite a while and I was adamant I didn't want one. Here's what I wrote in a blog post in May 2010:
"Now I personally don’t have, nor do I want a kindle. A nice idea I suppose in theory, to be able to carry around this one small thing that stores many, many books on it, but I like to see my bookshelf full of books, and I like the feel of a book in my hand. It’s very satisfying, the slight bendiness of a paperback, the hard firm cover of a....well, a hard cover, new books smell good, and I like the sound and feel of the pages as I turn them. You just can’t get the same experience from a Kindle"
I still agree with the part about preferring an actual book, curling up in bed with a Kindle doesn't seem as much fun, though it would be easier than curling up with a large hard cover. But recently, I have begun to see the pros to the Kindle. It's lightweight and I can take it on holidays with me and thus have several books at my fingertips, instead of trying to decide on which books to take and weighing my bag down with said books.
Sometimes at the vet clinic due to how busy it is, I get stuck having lunch by myself and I always wish I had brought a book with me. Carrying the kindle in my bag would solve that problem.
I will also be reviewing an ARC for a Suite author and if I continue to review books, it would probably be easier to transfer the pdf files to a Kindle than read them on my laptop or PC. So anyway, I have ordered a Kindle which is to be a birthday/xmas present. He he, what a turncloak I am.
The Kindle is that way of the future, and I can no longer deny it. There are so many writers on the Suite forums that have published eBooks and I wonder if eventually I'll do the same. Anyway, while the Kindle wont totally replace my lovely real life books and bursting bookcase, I can certainly see it being a useful eReader and I must say I can't wait until my new toy arrives!
